“THAT’S your spot,” Uncle Puff says as he cruises his car by the stadium.

“How you know?”

He chuckles. “Maybe my people drive by and see? Maybe I do? So why you box out there?”

I pump a fist. “Tryna get my hand skills like yours. Remember when you bodied Whiz?”

“Someone messing with you?”

I stay quiet, thinking.

He keeps on. “If yeah, I’ll handle it. Who is it?”

Okay, I think, Uncle Puff isn’t Uncle Frankie. He wants to get involved.

“Speak, Trev.”

I want to tell him about my stepdad. Get Uncle Puff to make him stop. But what if Uncle goes too far? Do I want my stepdad to end up . . . ?

“Cool. Don’t say. I’ll find out.”

“How?”

“Your moms.”

Puff can’t ask Ma.

“Nah,” I say, “don’t let her know. You handled Whiz solo. Let me do me.”

“So, someone is messing with you.”

“Nah. Just a punk. A bully. We’ll shoot a fair one. It’ll be done.”

We stop at a red light and Uncle Puff looks at me. “You know I got you, right?”

“For sure. Yeah.”

“And only cuz you ask, I’ll stay out of it. But if you need—”

“Thanks, Uncle Puff. That’s all I need. Just be here for me. Like now.”
